DISCUSSION AREA & USEFUL LINKS
DEPARMENT OF CONSERVATION  (http://www.doc.govt.nz/) is a must for information on government owned land.

PANZ Inc. (http://www.publicaccessnewzealand.org/) is concerned with continuing access to both government and private land, mainly for trampers and mountain-bikers, but is sympathetic to horse riders. PANZ is obviously a much bigger organisation with greater lobbying power. BRIDLEWAYS is a member and keeps in touch with their activities.

NZ ENDURANCE (http://www.horsetalk.co.nz)  This has the new web page for the New Zealand Endurance & Competitive Trail Riding Association.

FAR OUT EVENTS Organisers of the Great NZ Trail Ride and other events (on your own horse). Their link is http://www.gnztr.org.nz/

UNITED KINGDOM

Access & Rights of Way  (http://www.bhs.org.uk/arow.htm) is the nearest thing to BRIDLEWAYS in the UK. They already have a network of traditional bridle paths which they try to keep access to - this is a bit easier than in NZ where there were never any bridle paths as such.

UK Chasers  (http://www.ukchasers.com) (NEW SITE) have a network of farms etc. that allow people to ride over set trails with optional jumps. Riders pay to belong to UK CHASERS and then pay a small fee each time they use one of the rides. Do you think something like that could work here? Let us know what you think.

"Bridlerides"  (http://www.bridlerides.co.uk)  organise self-guided package holidays for horse owners. Have a look at this site and see if you think we could do something like that here - if you know of likely routes and farm-stays that would be great - let us have your comments.

Horse O Meter : (http://www.horseometer.com) This is a gadget that measures how far you have ridden - visit the site to see how it works

Public access:   Can you tell us about any good, public access, places to ride?  We need to compile a database of public areas where horse riders are allowed.  These could be trails, parks & reserves, etc.  They could be long routes through back country, or just a safe  shortcut near your local town - anywhere so long as it is a recognised place for horse riders.

Restricted access:  Can you tell us about other good areas to ride which may have restricted access - like some of the Regional Council land near Wellington, where riders are allowed, but have to have a key.   If so, do you know a contact for the key?  How do you get one?  Is there one available to borrow from a local club?   Are there restrictions on the time of year you can use the land (e.g. not while lambing is due).

Paid rides & holidays:  If you've checked out the UK links below, do you think something like UK Chasers or Bridlerides could work here?  How popular do you think they would be?  Do you know any landowners who might be interested?

If you can give us some details of riding in your area, please email the
web editor, or leave a message in the Guestbook.   Thanks!!!
