BRIDLEWAYS OF NEW ZEALAND was first set up in 1978 by a group of people who wanted to preserve and enhance the opportunities for horse riders to have permanent safe trails and bridle-paths to ride on.
BRIDLEWAYS is now administered as a subcommittee of the NZRC and has the support of much of the membership.  The President, Secretary and Treasurer are those of the NZRC, and the subcommittee consists of the Bridleways Convenor and other committee members.
Membership of BRIDLEWAYS consists mostly of riding clubs affiliated to the NZRC, but non-affiliated clubs (such as Western, Trail Riding, etc.) and also individuals can be members.  The monthly newletter of the NZRC, "Riders Roundup", is sent to all members of BRIDLEWAYS and this has a section for BRIDLEWAYS news.

Being in contact with other riders in your area is a good way to find new places to ride and people to ride with.  There are a number of BRIDLEWAYS members throughout the country who have good local knowledge and know how to contact people who can help you.  These people also have a range of experience in dealing with local authorities and DOC, and can often do a lot to help local clubs and riders.
BRIDLEWAYS aims to bring together a diverse range of horse riders and drivers who normally only ride in their own area, and who are mostly not aware of trails in other parts of the country, or sometimes even in their own region. BRIDLEWAYS can put you in touch with clubs and individual members in the area where you want to ride.

Having safe trails in picturesque scenery is important - but equally so are trails that give riders a safe way to get to their local club grounds (or other riding areas) with a minimum of road work.

These trails sometimes need a committed person - with great staying power! - to have extensive negotiations with local authorities before they can be established. BRIDLEWAYS can offer advice and support in such negotiations.
