N.I.T.E. 2001 - HAMILTON Report taken from "Riders Roundup"
As usual we had great weather, perhaps a bit too hot. We had 13 teams entered. Congratulations to H.O.R.S.E. Club, Otorohanga Riding Club and Papakura Riding Club. A job well done. A special thank you to the lady from Otorohanga RC who got all the sponsorship for all the lovely little goodies.
The Riding Club Mount proved not to be too hard and most riders mananged to get all the obstacles done eventually. Thank you to David Moynahan for the fantastic gates. Made specifically for this event, so just the right height. The time some riders were taking did become a concern. It does not only affect the Judges, standing around for hours in the hot sun, but also the other riders. Teams turned up at their expected start time and were standing around waiting. So a valuable discussion was held at the Prize Giving on Saturday night, to find a solution to the problem. All competitors were agreed that something had to be done to make things move a bit faster. It was agreed to set a Time by sending out a Guinea Pig rider before the event started. They would be timed and 60 seconds added. Competitors would then be given a "Warning Bell" 30 seconds before this time was up, and then would be stopped at the end of this time. They would not get any 'time penalties' but would not get any score for any uncompleted obstacles. Everyone agreed this would be the fairest way to do things. Anne Faithful, up from Invercargill, pointed out that this was how they did it at SITE.
The Quadrilles this year were even better than usual. Again some amazingly creative people out there. Franklin again excelled themselves. The heat in some costumes must have been incredible, so I salute your polished performances in trying conditions.
The Cross Country course was lovely and most riders felt there was a bit of something there for everyone. We had one nasty spill and I hope the lady concerned is now OK. I applaud the Otorohanga Team who then managed to rally together and put another team member on the fallen lady's horse to make a team for the Show Jumping in the afternoon. Brave lady, I think she managed to pop over one or two practice jumps before heading into the ring.
The Show Jumping went well. I think having the 12 jumps now makes it much better for some of our less confident riders, mearning everyone is encouraged to have a go. Still a challenge there for our more advanced riders. Especially Peter's "Piggy" Joker. We did have another few falls and unfortunately one rider had to be hospitalised. The First Aid guys were great. Sorry about the dent in the side of the ambulance (a horse backed into it).
We were lucky to have a fantastically spectacular mounted Prize Giving. It does polish off a great event to see everyone lined up in their teams. Congratulations to all the placegetters.
Franklyn have offered to host next year's NITE. Date and venue to be advised. So see you next year. |
