The Club is based in and around Ohakune extending as far south as Taihape, covering a large area with relatively few people. Our nearest neighbours are the Taupo Riding Club.
The Club was formed in 1986. In that time there have been approximately 90 members, four of whom have been with the club all of that time.
Present membership is nine members, and membership has seldom reached more than 20. Numbers fluctuate greatly due to membership from the Army Camp in Waiouru, where the population is very transient.
There have been three Secretary/Treasurers since the Club formed. Adrienne Maru is the present office holder. Foundation President Evelyn Cooper still holds this position.
Thirty four members have gained at least some NZRC Exams during their stay with the Club and six members, past or present, hold Grade III Riding and four the Horse Management Certificate.
The first ten years of the Club was celebrated in 1996 with a dinner for the then present and past members.
The Club has participated in N.I.T.E. for 11 years. The WRC hosted the event once in Taupo and won it the same year. The Club has held Open Gymkhanas in the past and in the last few years has hosted a September/October Dressage Series in Waiouru.
Social and meeting evenings are held approximately every six weeks. An annual Trivial Pursuit Challenge is held one winter evening with a potluck dessert supper. Farm and forest rides are held in the winter, as everyone is too busy with Pony Club, dressage or eventing for the rest of the year.
More members are always welcome with or without their own horse. Members from other clubs are very welcome to contact us if they are coming into the area. |
